Synopsis

The title is a quotation from the poet A.E. Housman (Last Poems XXV). The fate of the battle-cruiser HMS Hood, sunk by the German pocket-battleship Bismarck on 24th May 1941 with the loss of all but three members of the entire ship's company is one of the most well-remembered naval tragedies of the Second World War. The present author makes no apology for now adding to the considerable literature on that traumatic event which has appeared over the last 63 years, for the writer of the letters which she has now edited and provided with a connecting narrative was her brother, an electrical engineer who served on Hood for virtually all of its wartime career and who perished with its crew on that fatal day. As far as is known, no other letters from crew members of Hood have been published, if, indeed, any have survived; and these therefore offer a unique insight into the thoughts and opinions of a "Wavy Navy" officer who only joined the Royal Navy two days before the outbreak of war.
