Synopsis

In 1916 Lord Chelmsford became Viceroy of India. He appointed Verney, who had served with the Rifle Brigade in the Boer War and as Chelmsford's ADC in Australia, as his Military Secretary. These letters were written to, and by, Ralph's wife Nita and to other members of the family. Viceregal dealings with the Indian princes, court protocol, political events including the massacre at Amritsar and the Prince of Wales' visit to Australia in 1920 are among the subjects talked of, but it is mainly the private lives of themselves and the Chelmsfords that concern the Verneys in their correspondence.
In Viceregal India is edited by their younger son, David Verney, the last remaining member of his family able to read the shorthand in which Ralph and Nita wrote to each other.

Review

As engaging and human as it is appealing historically. For it is a portrait of the last grand days of British rule in India, with its colourful pageantry, ceremonies and social life; also an intimate picture of affectionate family life. Verney was a gallant fellow, a lively letter writer; they were a happy couple, and what a good time they had in those memorable days....an excellent book, brimming with colour -- A.L.Rowse
