Synopsis

This Masterclass in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Technology for Polar Science was supported by the UK Natural Environment Research Council International Opportunities Fund award `Collaborative Autosub Science in Extreme Environments' (CASEE). The aim of the Masterclass was to encourage debate and the free and frank exchange of information, problems and solutions for the use of autonomous underwater vehicle technology in polar science. As can be seen from the chapters in this book, the aim of the Masterclass was certainly achieved. With the full participation of all present and lively debate characterised the breakout sessions, several new collaborations have begun. In part, these have been supported
by another instrument of the CASEE programme - bursaries to young researchers
for international travel.Participants came from twelve countries and included established and new users of autonomous vehicles. Academia, industry and defence were represented. Scientists and technologists found the Masterclass provided an excellent, and all too rare, opportunity
for discussion of future needs and directions for this new technology for polar science. All applauded the vision and risk-taking nature of the NERC funding for the Autosub Science Missions and Autosub Under Ice programmes. It is now up to scientists to propose research projects and programmes that will realise the potential of autonomous underwater vehicles in extreme environments. A step in that direction will take place in Cambridge in April 2007 at the CASEE Science Workshop. It will be an exciting future.

From the Back Cover

Maritime polar environments are some of the most challenging areas on earth. Autonomous underwater vehicles offer tremendous potential as one solution to cost-effective data-gathering for science and industry in these inhospitable areas. The International Polar Year 2007-2009 provides a particular focus for science. In preparation for an upsurge in the use of AUVs for polar research, this Masterclass brought together an international group of engineers and scientists to assess current performance and future requirements. The contributed papers provide both a resource for new AUV users and critical analyses of what reamins to be achieved if, after the International Polar Year, AUVs are to be a lasting lagacy as observers of the polar oceans.
