The dust jacket is in fine condition. 9 ¼ x 6 ¼, 232 pages, 16 ounces XX [From the interior flaps] Could a computer really be programmed to lead a candidate successfully, step by step, into the most powerful office in the Western world? In 1980 Ronald Reagan, Hollywood movie star of the thirties to fifties and former Governor of California, gained an electoral victory of staggering proportions to become the fortieth President of the United States. His opponents in the Democratic Party were stunned. Politicians across the globe were eager to know how this relative outsider had suddenly triumphed by such an overwhelming majority. Surely a master plan required a master architect? Mexican President Portillo's first question to Reagan when they met shortly after the election was: "Mr President, who is Dick Wirthlin?" As Reagan's more visible managers answered journalists' questions about strategy on the campaign trail, Dr Richard Wirthlin and his devoted team of Mormon pollsters and political scientists quietly directed their candidate's every move on his survey company's sophisticated computers. Their program had taken twenty years to perfect. It was called PINS and its function was to 'simulate' the election, mathematically linking every possible factor into a model of the coming event - years, months and days before it actually happened. The raw data was awesome, probing deeply into the hearts and minds of the entire population. Yet it was only the beginning. With Reagan in the White House, Wirthlin would add to PINS every scrap of information ever collected on the American people. He was also given a new task: to develop a computer system that would guide the Presidency in much the same way he had directed Reagan to win the 1980 election. The computer had come to power. Politics and government would never be the same again. This fascinating exposé is the result of over four years' intensive research and several hundred hours of taped interviews. It chronicles the dramatic rise to prominence of America's new power brokers, focusing on the titanic battle between Wirthlin and the first 'high priest' of computer politics, Pat Caddell, who masterminded the rise from obscurity of Jimmy Carter and Gary Hart. It follows Wirthlin through revealing behind-the-scenes power struggles within the new administration while incidentally raising disturbing questions about whose finger is really on the nuclear button. The book also examines the novel role of American pollster-strategists abroad and their influence on elections from France and England to the Philippines. Seller Inventory # 002686
