A Midshipman's Bible during the Age of Fighting Sail.
First published in 1794, this work became the standard training manual for young gentlemen joining the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleanic Wars, and the War of 1812. Two volumes quarto with 100 plates, which include full details on the making of every sail used by every rate of ship in the Royal Navy at that time. Also a section which includes two movable vovelles that show you how to sail a man of war. A complete section on naval tactics, another on mast making with fold-out plates. Anchor making, rope making and almost any subject that you would need to master if you were to be an officer in Nelson's navy.
This fine limited edition of 500 copies only is the only facsimilie reprint of the full 1794 work by David Steel. This set bound in half blue leather with gilt titles and nautical devices on the spine and using Cockerel paper for the outside boards. Our reprint has been used by historic ship restorers, naval authors and model makers the world over.
