A selection of Julian Brown's published and unpublished papers, this book is a tribute to one of the great palaeographers of our generation. It is designed to provide interesting reading for all students of manuscripts, offering insights also into the wider contexts of early history and art. His advances in methodology, combined with deductive reasoning from what he saw before him, are apparent in all the papers included in this volume. He clearly understood and expressed the sense of continuity from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages and sought particularly to demonstrate that a study of manuscripts could bring about a broader understanding of scholarship. The editors have arranged the papers in a thematic sequence, up-dated the bibliographical material, and added other necessary information. Many of the manuscripts and examples of script discussed are illustrated. This book should provide provide a firm foundation for the further study of the history of learning in this country and should serve as a basic reference tool for all students of palaeography.
