Synopsis
Studies in the history of the astronomy of the stars, nebulae and the universe as a whole, from the sixteenth century to the twentieth. Until the nineteenth century, astronomy was mainly concerned with the solar system, the stars being seen mainly as a fixed and unchanged backcloth to the planetary movements. This book deals with the emergence of the stars, nebulae and the universe as a whole, as a valid subject of investigation, from the new star of 1572, to the debates on the nebulae in the 1920s.
