Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine hardcover with dust jacket. This book will take you back to a world of noisy electric trains, queuing up with jam jars for the four-penny rush at the cinema, cures and herbs for all ailments, long gone now in the days of patent medicine. This is a collection of stories from the 1940's when gas light was still around, when working hours were long and pay very small. But through the hardship there was also fun and laughter. Chapter headings include Lighting the Lamps, Cockles and Periwinkles, Schooldays in Richmond Barracks and Paying the Rent. The book is beautifully illustrated with black and white drawings by Liam Delaney and Michael O'Brien. Collector's Item. Seller Inventory # 938
