Synopsis
The explanation of population increase in England during the industrial revolution period has long been a question of controversy, and it has recently become fashionable to discount the role of medicine in bringing about the demographic transition. Dr Razell in his book puts forward the radical thesis that one specific medical therapy - inoculation against smallpox - was highly effective in reducing mortality, and this was of great significance for the demographic and economic history of England, Ireland, Scotland and the United States of America. The book presents new evidence and arguments for redefining the nature and effectiveness of inoculation (variolation), and shows how its practice nearly eliminated smallpox before the end of the 18th century.
