Synopsis
As plastics continue to replace metals in a wide range of applications from automotive to domestic goods and appliances, provision of a metallic surface coating becomes more important. Theory of metal-to-plastic adhesion is covered in depth, with techniques for its measurement. Metallizing can be carried out by electrochemical means, electroless plating, or by physical & gas=phase methods such as PVD, CVD, as well as metal spraying, flame spraying, HVOF and plasma spraying. These and other techniques are reviewed, The most important plastic substrates for metallising are discussed in detail, incl. ABS, ABS/PC blends, polypropylene, polyamides and fluoroplastics, polyimides, polyetherimides and fibre-reinforced plastics.
