Synopsis

Explaining Everything ! in more depth does not attempt to explain everything. It is about what is necessary to explain anything. It shows how a method of explanation controls your beliefs. It shows we have ten abilities that combine in different ways to form the basis of different beliefs including academic beliefs, scientific beliefs, religious beliefs, our culture and your values. Many apparently conflicting explanations, in reality do not do so because they use different methods. It is the wealth of examples that makes this book come alive. Some of the conclusions are astonishing.

About the Author

As a materialist by the 1960s, Bligh saw that education will depend upon the study of neurophysiology and that scientific determinism will require a radical shift in policing and penal justice.
Although university teacher training did not exist, he knew it would come and began to prepare himself for that career. He taught a wide variety of subjects to adults. He, observed, developed and assessed teachers of physical medicine. He began research into university teaching methods and after joining the staff of London's Institute of Education, in 1971 he published his first book, "What's the Use of Lectures?" It was an instant success, quickly became a classic, earned him a world-wide reputation and 40 years later it remains unrivalled in its field. Other books followed. He was consulted internationally until his retirement. He moved to the University of Exeter, then to Dundee as Professor of Continuing Education and Head of Education, and finally to Edinburgh as Assistant Principal before returning to Exeter as an Honorary Research Fellow.
His pioneering work in the training of university teachers broadened his academic interests to every university discipline, their methods of enquiry and how they relate together, or not, as the case may be. He took an aerial view of human knowledge. He developed what he called "cognipathy", the ability to think
