A GREAT WESTERN GALLERY
This collection of pictures of life on the Great Western Railway covers the period from 1889, when Brunei's Broad Gauge was in its last years, to the passing of the Company in 1947 with Nationalisation. A final section deals with the years that followed until the end of steam haulage eliminated the Great Western Region of British Railways.
The album has been compiled by two members of the Great Western Society, itself formed to preserve the products and memory of the old railway company. It is hoped that the collection will appeal to enthusiast, historian and modeller alike.
While any book on the Great Western Railway is likely to feature the locomotives, A Great Western Gallery combines these with a selection of old, and not so old, photographs that picture other aspects of life on the railway, including architecture, road transport, the staff at work, unusual rolling stock and freight handling. The aim has been to use material not published in recent years, if at all. Many of the items were found in the British Rail archives and are original official GWR photographs for use in their publications.
THE EDITORS
Brian Davis and Tony Rivers have been members of the Great Western Society for several years, and Tony is currently serving as Chairman of the Reading Group. Their interest in railways and the Great Western in particular, began whilst they were at school and they first met on Reading General Station "spotting" locomotives. As their interest and financial resources grew, they travelled together over most of the old Great Western system and visited almost all of the locomotive depots. Since the disappearance of steam, Brian's interest has centred on the historical aspects of the G W R , and he has become a keen collector of all G.W publications. Tony is a collector of both relics and literature and he devotes much of his spare time in helping to run the Reading Group.
