The government is seeking to introduce performance related pay for teachers. Is this desirable in principle? If so, how should it be conceptualised? Michael Luntley offers a radical challenge to the government's proposals. He is not opposed to the principle of prp, but rejects the current close connections between performance and output. If pay is indeed to be related to performance, we need to have a firmaer grasp of what counts as good performance. The philosophical account of this in the pamphlet provides the clarification required. It also points the way towards an alternative conception of prp.
