Synopsis
Violetta Thurstan, lent by the British Red Cross, served in a Russian Unit in Prince Volkonsky's Mobile Ambulance (The Flying Ambulance) during the 1914/1918 war. The unit was attached to General Ivanov's Third Army in the retreat through Poland and East Prussia down to the Ravka river which covered the defences of Warsaw. This book is the story of her experiences during those nightmare days.
Trench warfare means existence in appalling conditions; much has been written about the Western Front but the Eastern Front has been sadly neglected by comparison. The terrible conditions of the West were exacerbated on the East by the climate. Snow and ice made the flimsy lines of communication even more difficult and food, arms, clothing, medical supplies were all in very short supply. The only thing the East had in abundance was men. Conditions in the field hospitals were awful and all the time the snow and ice created extra problems for an already overworked and undersupplied team. During the time Violetta Thurstan served with the Flying Ambulance unit, the Russian army was in retreat at first slowly and then with terrifying speed as the German army pushed forwards towards the glittering prize of Warsaw. No one knew where the next field hospital might be, when the wounded came in there was no rest from facing the realities of war, broken and dismembered bodies, conveyor belt operations in the most primitive of conditions. 'The Hounds of War Unleashed' is at times truly a story of horror, and yet somehow morale was maintained and amidst the chaos and madness of war there were some tender moments and unbelievably there were survivors. Violetta Thurstan was awarded the St.George the Russian medal given for service in the field for her work with the Flying Ambulance."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
