Synopsis

'Callum Innes: exposed paintings' was published to celebrate his second solo exhibition of new paintings at the Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh in 2001. It contains an introductory essay by Marco Livingstone and 50 colour illustrations of paintings from the Exposed series. Callum Innes was born in Edinburgh in 1962 and studied at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen and at the Edinburgh College of Art. He is an abstract painter whose work balances its singular intensity with a seeming contradiction - namely that something so apparently simple can have such a complex effect on the mind and eye. Innes was shortlisted for both the Turner and Jerwood Prizes in 1995, and in 1998 he was the winner of the Nat West Prize for Painting. In 2002 he was announced as the winner of the prestigious Jerwood Painting Prize 2002. His work hangs in many public collections worldwide including the Tate in London and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. He has exhibited all over the world including, in the past couple of years, solo shows in London, New York, Auckland and Dublin. A major exhibition of his paintings will tour key American museums in 2004/2005.
