The first version of this key appeared in the Journal of The Society for Water Treatment and Examination in 1969 (Vol. 18, Part 2) under the title "A Key to the Identification of the More Common Algae Found in Water Undertakings in Britain", and was later issued as a separate publication. It identified about 70 different algae. This was increased to over 150 different species in a revised version entitled "A Key to the Identification of the More Common Algae Found in British Freshwaters", which appeared in The Society Journal in 1974 (Vol. 23, Part 1). The Society amalgamated with The Institution of Water Engineers in 1975, to form the Institution of Water Engineers and Scientists. This latest version of the key has been extended yet further, and now identifies over 220 different algae.
