Synopsis
Samuel Butler has been authoritatively described as one of the greatest English philosophers, and this book contains the first reprint of his earliest and most daring work, a critical analysis of the Resurrection story as told in the Gospels. He deduces from internal evidence that Jesus was alive when taken down from the cross, and that his apparent Resurrection was in fact a providential recovery under the care of Joseph of Arimathea. Butler's aim was not to discredit Christianity, but on the contrary, to reinforce belief in its essentials by discarding the dubious miraculous trappings. This edition also contains a short introduction by Robert Johnstone and a modern article by a surgeon, W.B. Primrose, which supports Butler's conclusion on medical grounds. No collection of Samuel Butler's writings should be without this seminal work
