British Tokens And Their Values
Seller: Crappy Old Books, Barry, United Kingdom
Seller rating 5 out of 5 stars
Hardback. Condition: Near Fine. There are books for dreamers, books for romantics, and books for the gloriously exacting souls who can look at a small, grubby piece of unofficial metal and feel their pulse quicken. British Tokens and Their Values is unapologetically for the latter camp: a splendidly specific volume devoted to the curious world of token coinage, where commerce, local history, industrial improvisation and collector obsession all meet in beautifully catalogued harmony. Written by Peter Seaby and Monica Bussell, and published in 1984, this is the sort of book that instantly signals seriousness of purpose. Not coins , mind you. That would be too broad, too easy, too democratic. No, tokens ?those fascinating little substitutes, stopgaps, workarounds and quasi-currencies that sprang up whenever official coinage was inadequate, inconvenient or simply not up to the job. Britain, being Britain, has always had a particular genius for muddling through with unofficial systems while insisting on the dignity of the enterprise, and tokens are one of the finest expressions of that national talent. There is something deeply lovable about the whole subject. Tokens are history in miniature: tiny metal witnesses to shortage, trade, transport, local pride, private enterprise and the endless ingenuity of people determined to keep buying and selling things even when the state had failed to provide enough proper small change. They are the loose ends of economic history, the side doors of numismatics, the overlooked cousins of the sovereign and the shilling. And naturally, once something like that exists, someone has to classify it all with tremendous care, assign values, and create the sort of guidebook that makes complete sense to collectors and appears gloriously eccentric to everyone else. That is where this book comes in. British Tokens and Their Values promises exactly what the title suggests, with an almost heroic absence of marketing flourish. No sensational subtitle, no attempt to lure in the casually curious with promises of hidden fortunes in the biscuit tin. Just British tokens, and their values. It is this plain-spoken confidence that gives the book its charm. It knows its audience. It assumes, quite reasonably, that if you are the sort of person to pick it up, you do not need to be persuaded that a nineteenth-century trade token from somewhere obscure in the Midlands is worth caring about. You are already halfway in love. And really, there is a quiet comedy in the seriousness of numismatic reference works that only increases their appeal. The world outside may be in chaos, but here is a book calmly informing you about the worth of small metal discs once used in shops, markets, factories or public houses. Empires may rise and fall, fashions may come and go, but someone, somewhere, still wants to know whether that token with an oddly worn edge and a faintly visible issuer?s name is common, scarce or the sort of thing that makes a collector go very still for a moment. As a Near Fine copy sold by Crappy Old Books, this one has the particularly satisfying contradiction of being about objects that often circulated through grimy hands, tills and pockets, while itself remaining in impressively elegant condition. Near Fine suggests a book that has been treated with the sort of respect usually reserved for things whose owners knew precisely what they had. Which feels right. A token guide should not be dog-eared into oblivion by amateurs; it should sit on a shelf with quiet authority, ready to settle arguments and encourage the dangerous thought that perhaps one more collecting niche might be worth exploring. There is also something wonderfully 1980s about a reference book like this: practical, specialised, and entirely uninterested in pandering. It comes from a world in which enthusiasts bought books because they needed information, not because they wanted lifestyle branding. It is a proper collector?s companion, likely dense with listings, values and the sort of hard-earned knowledge that can only be assembled by people who truly care about the subject. That seriousness is part of the pleasure. Even if you only have a passing interest in tokens, there is something immensely reassuring about a book that takes them this seriously. In the end, British Tokens and Their Values is more than a price guide. It is a portal into one of those marvellously specific byways of British history where money, metal, locality and obsession come together. Ideal for collectors, dealers, historians, or anyone whose heart lifts slightly at the thought of Victorian trade substitutes and meticulously compiled valuations. A handsome, near-fine survivor from the age of proper reference books?proof that even the smallest bits of Britain?s past can inspire large amounts of devotion. Seller Inventory # 6144

British Tokens And Their Values
Seller: Crappy Old Books, Barry, United Kingdom
Seller rating 5 out of 5 stars
Hardback. Condition: Good. British Tokens and Their Values (1984) by Peter Seaby & Monica Bussell Publisher: Seaby | ISBN: 0900652659 | Condition: Good (with civic seasoning) Proudly exiled from Camden Libraries, now rehomed via Crappy Old Books Ah, 1984?not just Orwell?s dystopia, but also the year Seaby and Bussell decided the world desperately needed a comprehensive guide to British tokens. Tokens! Those humble discs of metal that once stood in for money when the Royal Mint was too busy doing whatever the Royal Mint does. Here you?ll find tavern checks, transport tokens, coal pit tallies, and other fragments of everyday history that jingled in pockets long before contactless payments and Apple Pay. This particular copy? It?s an ex-library survivor, carrying the proud scars of public service. ?Public Libraries Camden? is embossed on the cover in a way that says: once I belonged to everyone, now I belong to you . There may be the faintest whiff of institutional carpet glue, the odd pencilled catalogue code, and perhaps a ghostly memory of being stamped ?RETURN BY 15 MAY 1987.? In other words, it?s Good ?library good. Robust. Battle-tested. Possibly better laminated against the elements than most of us. Inside, the scholarship is earnest and oddly charming. Meticulously listed values, neat line drawings, and the unspoken promise that one day, perhaps, the bag of ?worthless coppers? in your grandfather?s shed might fund your early retirement (spoiler: it won?t). Why do you need this book? Because numismatics is the new rock ?n? roll. Because ?token collector? sounds faintly cooler than ?cryptocurrency enthusiast.? Because owning an ex-library book makes you feel like you?ve stolen a tiny piece of municipal history without actually breaking the law. In short: British Tokens and Their Values ?a slightly scuffed, Camden-branded slice of cataloguing zeal, still perfectly Good , and still proudly jingling with irony in the hands of Crappy Old Books .
