In 1847, the American Medical Association established a code of medical ethics at its first official meeting. This 1994 edition is the most recent edition of the code. "Current Opinions" is one component of the AMA's Code of Ethics. The other components are the "Principles of Medical Ethics", (included in "Current Opinions"), "Fundamental Elements of the Patient-Physician Relationship" (also printed in "Current Opinions") and the "Reports of the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs". This text reflects the application of the principles of medical ethics to more than 125 specific ethical issues in medicine, including health care rationing, genetic testing, withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, and family violence. Each opinion is followed by one or more roman numerals that identify the principle from which the opinion is derived. Each opinion is also followed by a list of annotations that reflect citations to the opinion in judicial rulings and the medical, ethical, and legal literature.
