From the Author

This isn't just for writers!
After twenty years working in and with English colonial living history museums and training interpreters, I was very aware that no good, comprehensive overview of the social history of the period existed. Writer's Digest Books' Guide series provided an opportunity to fill this gap. Consequently, this book was conceived to fill 3 distinct but similar purposes:

1) To help writers acquire specific information about the time period to use in their work, including material on events, such as scandals and other material not normally included in general histories, for use in fleshing out their stories.

2) To serve as an introductory social history text, from which students can gain an understanding of the relationships, trends and patterns of the era, and from which they can proceed to more topical studies.

3) To provide museum interpreters, docents, reenactors and others interested in the period a good basic introduction, allowing them to understand the context of their site-specific information.

Given it's size, it cannot cover any of the subjects in the detail which more scholarly studies do, but if it provides the concepts which tie together these studies, then it will provide a short-cut over many years of acquired knowledge for those who do not have the time to amass such a wide scope of information in more traditional, scholarly ways. This lets everyone begin to understand the complex relationships, divisive and unifying factors and elusive "mindset" of the period without spending the years of study normally necessary to understand these issues.
