His understanding of communication skills was pivotal in bringing the Republican Party from the brink of disaster in 1974 to its present position of power and prominence. When most political pundits were writing the GOP off as a ghost of past glories, Vander Jagt was digging in as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee to rebuild it, to change it from an almost defunct political organization to what is recognized as the "best political shop" in the country. This he did in half a decade. In addition, even when the White House became Democratic in 1976, Vander Jagt's voice was heard on the campaign trail as a call to arms rallying Republicans and stirring Americans everywhere to support a "new beginning" with a new president. After 1980, President Reagan called upon Vander Jagt's communication skills to increase Republican strength in the House.
