Synopsis
Reflects the diversity of the paintings, sculptures, photographs, performances and videos by 87 women artists. A careers section charts the representation of women artists in exhibitions, art magazines and corporate collections. Biographies are provided for each artist, followed by a list of the major group exhibitions of the period, annotated with the names of these artists who participated in them. A variety of essays examine the phenomenon of the rapid development of women artists during the 1970s.

About the Author
Judith E. Stein is a Philadelphia-based writer and curator who specializes in postwar American art. A former arts reviewer for NPR's "Fresh Air" and "Morning Edition," her writing has appeared in "Art in America", "The New York Times Book Review", and numerous museum publications. She is the recipient of a Pew Foundation Fellowship in the Arts in literary non-fiction and a Warhol Foundation/Creative Capital Arts Writers Grant. A graduate of Barnard College, she holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Pennsylvania.

This was a dubious premise because many feminist artists of the early women's movement wanted to revolutionize the world, rather than enter the mainstream. Instead of focusing on feminist artists, however, the exhibition showcased women artists who were, if not necessarily activists, then beneficiaries of feminism and the fight for equality. The exhibition underplayed the importance of conceptual, performance, and video art at the expense of more traditional, and commercially-viable, forms like painting and works on paper. Many of the artists in the exhibition were affiliated with the Pattern & Decoration movement of the late seventies and early eighties. Despite the rather uplifting title, the catalogue provides a wealth of data and statistics showing how women continued to be discriminated against by artworld institutions.
