Synopsis

These 60 services for the days of Advent and Lent reflect the author's belief that prayer is a total body-mind-heart response that involves silence, rituals and repetition, which are all very important for children. These creative services involve children in celebrating God's presence through processions, veneration of the Bible, prayer patterns (such as litanies and repeated refrains), speaking parts, guided meditations and blessings. When appropriate, the services include words or phrases from the Mass, the Bible and traditional prayers to help children make "connections" between liturgy, the Bible and life. Catholic customs, such as prayer to Mary and the saints, practising virtue and fasting and abstinence, are also presented. The appendix includes "Prayers and Phrases" (that children should know), "Guidelines for Meditations" and "Get-Acquainted Activities for Children". Those who gather with children, aged seven to 12, on a regular basis can use these services as part of a meeting, class, sacrament practice session or family meal.

It is an opportunity for catechists, teachers and parents to share the heritage of the Christian faith in a prayerful atmosphere during Lent and Advent. Gwen Costello is the editor of "Religion Teacher's Journal" and author of "Stations of the Cross for Children", "The Angel's Advent Lesson" and "The Angel's Mass Lesson".
