Synopsis

Prayer is an essential first item of business for every parish meeting. A parish is not a corporation where the motive is to get through each meeting as quickly and as efficiently as possible. At a parish meeting, a body of Christian ministers come together to make Spirit-filled decisions for the good of the parish. Calling on the help of God is intrinsic to these deliberations. The prayer services in this book are both reverential and relevant to daily experience, and help meeting participants prayerfully enter into the work before them with a sense of mission and purpose. Because each prayer service is lectionary-based, it also assists those gathered to prepare themselves for the proclamation of the Word on the upcoming Sunday. Each two-page prayer service has five elements: call to prayer; opening prayer; scripture reading; shared reflection; and closing prayer. Since these services are designed to be used at the start of a meeting, there is also a prayer to use at the end of the meeting.

These prayer services are appropriate for parish councils, liturgy committees, finance boards, parish staff, religious educators, scripture study groups and virtually any parish meeting or gathering. Reproduction rights are included with this book, enabling parishes to give copies of the service to each meeting participant. Marliss Rogers is the author (with William Rademacher) of "The New Practical guide for Parish Councils".
