Synopsis

Provides a cogent analysis of the economic and social realities for women in the United States, across class lines. From the Author

A clear, accessible discussion of women's poverty
We have written Glass Ceilings and Bottomless Pits to provide a clear, accessible discussion of women's poverty and the flawed welfare policies that the U.S. has adopted. We are proud that Diane Dujon, welfare activist and author, commented that "Every activist and advocate working for justice for low-income women should read this book!" We emphasize the links between the "glass ceiling" faced by professional women and the "bottomless pit" faced by women in poverty--since both encounter wage discrimination and the demands of child care. We give a brief history of anti-poverty policy, criticize the recent mean-spirited welfare reforms, and suggest alternative policies that could help women out of poverty and move us closer to gender equality. The book has detailed documentation including dozens of tables and charts, a resource list, and a compilation of major myths and facts.
