Digital networking, such as on the World Wide Web, makes our global cultural heritage accessible to an ever-widening audience. To reach this audience and ensure researchers can find the information they seek, it is essential to create and employ a consistent terminology to the language used in information retrieval contexts.
Introduction to Vocabulariesexplains, demonstrates, and advocates the use of controlled vocabularies in describing, cataloging, and documenting cultural heritage information. A six-chapter study guide discusses vocabularies in the context of documentation, standards, and access. The book concludes with descriptions of three vocabulary databases developed by the Getty Information Institute: Art & Architecture Thesaurus, the Union List of Artist Names, and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names.
