Synopsis

Any drug that has an effect on illness also has the potential to demonstrate adverse effects. Therefore, it is critical for physicians and patients to weigh the potential benefits versus the potential harm that can be caused by a given treatment. This book applies this principle to the practice of clinical psychopharmacology, the use of biological treatment for psychiatric ailments. Classifying the drug-induced reactions into a disorder or syndrome oriented approach, this book is split in three sections. The first deals with general principles of therapeutics focusing on how to avoid or deal with adverse drug effects. The second section includes chapters on adverse neuropsychiatric effects of drugs used in psychiatry. The last section looks at non-neurological syndromes related to psychotherapeutic drug use. Emphasis has been placed on practical clinical diagnosis and management, and where clinically relevant, aspects of basic pharmacology. It is aimed at psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, nonpsychiatric physicians and other health care professonals involved in the care of the mentally ill.
