This book describes the underlying theory behind acousto-optic devices, including many of the principles and design formulas used by research engineers in their device designs. It illustrates the design process with numerical examples and references to pertinent literature. It presents a discussion of surface wave devices with special concentration on their application to integrated optics. The text also considers many of the fundamental acousto-optic devices, including modulators, filters and Q-switches. It describes the different types of acousto-optic convolvers, correlators and spectrum analyzers along with more complicated systems, such as optical computers and matrix processors.
