Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reid, Bill; Bringhurst, Robert - Drawings (illustrator). Assumed First Edition. 91 Pages. Tan boards. Five inked lines for gift inscription on front endpaper and two inked lines for ownership on the half-title page. Beyond that is a book and jacket in new condition. This book is a collaboration between one of the finest living artists in North America and one of Canada's finest poets. Ten masterful, complex drawings by Bill Reid are accompanied by ten episodes from Haida mythology, told by Bill Reid and Robert Bringhurst. In each case, the drawing informs the story and the story elucidates the drawing in a way that brings Haida art and Haida mythology alive as they have never been before in an English-speaking world. The characters include Nanasimgit and his wife, who was abducted by the Killer Whale; the hunter who becomes a seawolf; Wealthsound and the Lady of the Frogs; the Eagle Prince; the elusive Dogfish Woman, and of course the devious and perpetually hungry Raven. "All in all," says Reid, "a good selection of bestiality, adultery, violence, thievery and assault, for those who like that sort of thing" But there is more to it than that. The stories demonstrate the richness and the range of Haida mythology, from bawdy yet profound tales of the trickster Raven to poignant, imagistic narratives of love and its complications in a world where animals speak, dreams come real, and demigods, monsters and men live side by side.
