Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Rescued from a library cull, the book presents some edgewear and a few stamps and stickers, otherwise quite good. This is the first edition and not the more common Centennial Edition. The book's subject is the Trillium, a double-end side-paddle steam ferry launched in June 1910 for the Toronto Island Company and christened after Ontario's provincial flower. At the time of her launch she was only briefly noticed in the local press, but she went on to cruise the waters of Toronto Bay for nearly fifty years before retiring from active service in 1956. She was then saved from the scrapyard in 1973 and restored to full operational condition, returning to service in 1976 as a working steam ferry ? a status she continues to hold, making her one of the last operating side-paddle steamers in North America.Filey uses the Trillium as the organizing thread for a broader history of passenger travel to Toronto Island, tracing the Island's development as a recreational destination from the nineteenth century onward, the various ferry services that carried Torontonians across the bay, and the social history of Island life itself.
