Synopsis
This remarkable book chronicles the efforts of biologist Steven Kress to rejuvenate a once-flourishing puffin colony on Egg Rock, an island off the Maine coast, with puffin chicks from Newfoundland. With their large, colorful beaks, their upright posture, and their big, dark eyes, it's easy to see why puffins are popular all over the world. But for the past hundred years, puffins along the coast of Maine have been threatened with local extinction. Biologist Stephen Kress decided to try to bring puffins back to Maine with an experiment that had never been attempted before. About the Authors
Pete Salmansohn is an educator for Audubon, was named Maine's Environmental Educator of the Year in 1998 and in 2001 received a Visionary Award from the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment. Pete has led hundreds of public boat cruises to see puffins on Eastern Egg Rock, Maine.
Stephen W. Kress contributed to nature guides from Golden Guides and St. Martin's Press, and is Audubon's Vice-president for bird conservation and director of Audubon's Seabird Restoration Project.
