He was researching the concern and compassion of church members and their willingness to help those in need. He was shocked by their lack of response and caring.

As a result, he wrote a series of stories that asked the question, "What would Jesus do," and read them from his pulpit on Sunday evenings. Within a few weeks he was reading to standing-room-only crowds that included many young people. As Sheldon unfolded his story, the question, "What would Jesus do?" stirred their spirits as nothing had before.
