How this book presents a different New Hampshire
New Hampshire has been best known for its White Mountains, the highest peaks in New England, both as a hiking and resort destination since the nineteenth century. Much of the rest of this beautiful state is, however, generally under-rated. In the course of repeated prowling expeditions throughout the state, I am continually surprised by the beauty of classic white clapboard villages and great by places to stay that their owners tell me they wouldn't have been able to afford to buy in Maine or Vermont. I have actually divided New Hampshire into different regions than the state does and my favorites, those I cover in this book, are the Monadnock Region (the southwest corner, great for bicycling, hiking, studded with those villages) and the Upper Valley , a 200-mile corridor along northern new England's oldest highway, the Conencticut River. I have written regularly for The Boston Globe Sunday travel section for 30 years (around 1000 articles) and began the Explorer's Guide series 20 years ago (it now includes guides for each New England state). My co-authors are both well-known New Hamphsire writers.
