"Perhaps no one person has ever so profoundly influenced typemaking as this man who quietly, purposefully, full-heartedly held to his principles of craftsmanship and stubbornly adhered to his high standards. For nearly fifty years Frederic Goudy designed types of character, beauty, and dignity. For nearly twenty of those years he not only designed, but cut the matrices and cast the types as well. Destruction of his equipment by fire in the old mill that was his workshop halted that phase of his activity. During his long and productive life he created more than one hundred type faces. No one, was better fitted to understand the alphabet and the elements of lettering than this man who so often took the twenty-six letters, lower case, capitals, roman and italic, and 'thought' them into new and usable forms. The Alphabet, which first appeared in 1919, was a study particularly of the history and development of the roman character. Bruce Rogers, in a letter to Goudy, called it 'your magnificent book of lettering.' The Elements of Lettering, pubished in 1923, presented the elements and essentials of letter forms. The two books were long out of print and the steady demand for them resulted in this new edition of the two books issued as one volume, amplified and enlarged by Goudy, and with a number of new drawings.".
