Synopsis
`Exile and Return' is Edmund Keeley's selection from eight books of poetry published by Yannis Ritsos during the Colonel's dictatorship in Greece. Ritsos, a long-standing Communist who had been gaoled for four years at the end of the Civil War in the late forties, was arrested after the 1967 coup. Following a period of detention in camps on Yiaros and Leros, he was sent into exile on Samos, where he lived under house arrest until permitted to return to Athens in 1970.
Although these poems are rarely overtly political in content, they form a most vivid and acute poetic characterization of the aura that dominated those years. Both Ritsos's international standing and the quality of Edmund Keeley's translations were recognized by the award of the first European Prize for the Translation of Poetry, given by the European Commission in Brussels.

About the Author
Yannis Ritsos (born in 1909) is Greece's most prolific contemporary poet, having published some hundred books of poetry, translations, essays and dramatic works since his first collection came out in 1934. He and and the 1979 Nobel laureate, Odysseus Elytis, are generally considered to be the most important living poets writing in Greek. In recent years he has reached a wide international audience through translation, both in Eastern as well as Western Europe.
Edmund Keeley is a novelist and critic as well as the translator (often with Philip Sherrard) of Cavafy, Seferis and Elytis. He teaches creative writing and Hellenic Studies at Princeton University.
