This discovery of a selected neurotransmitter deficiency linked to a specific pathologic lesion in Parkinson's disease, and the remarkable therapeutic response when the deficiency was corrected served as the driving force in focusing active research into the function of various areas of the brain, most notably the basal ganglia. In addition, the motor complications seen with dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease and those occurring with antidopaminergic therapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders have also played a critical role in the understanding of the phenomenology and pathophysiology of movement disorders.
