Association copy: author Elizabeth Watson's own copy of this guide to the grounds of Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory, inscribed boisterously to friends across the whole title page (see photo). Her husband, Nobel Laureate James D. Watson, has added his signature on the right-most margin, reading simply "Jim" (it would seem he signed the book at a later date, since Elizabeth Watson has dated the inscription twice--they used a blue ink for a the second round). He has written a preface to the book. On the front free endpaper of this copy is Elizabeth Watson's address stamp, ownership initials, and phone number, marking the book as a personal copy. A great find for fans of science; with the help of James Watson's leadership for 35 years (ending in 2007), the private Cold Springs Harbor Lab has distinguished itself as a beacon of research on cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, genomics, and quantitative biology. Very near fine without a dust jacket as issued. Watson to well-known author, columnist, speech writer, and Pulitizer Prize-winner William Safire on the front free endpaper: "For Bill Safire, Jim Watson." Also inscribed by the author of this wonderful guide to the grounds of the Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, Elizabeth Watson (James D. Watson's wife) on the title page:"Best wishes, Elizabeth Watson." Laid in is a short letter on Cold Springs Harbor Stationary (still in its envelope) to Safire from Jim Watson transmitting the book and thanking him for attending a meeting at the Lab on "How Can We Improve on Brains." Watson writes, in part, "How we can maximize the performance of our individual brains largely remains undiscovered, and I look forward to more Banbury [a conference center at the Lab] gatherings on this topic. In the meanwhile, I play singles tennis with a Wilson racket earlier used by Roger Federer." Watson is a big tennis fan and one-time player. A great find for fans of science (tennis, too); with the help of James Watson's leadership for 35 years (ending in 2007), the private Cold Springs Harbor Lab has distinguished itself as a beacon of research on cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, genomics, and quantitative biology. He has written a preface to the book. A near fine copy on account of one small tear to rear spine crown; without a dust jacket as issued. The letter is near fine with some creases to right edge where it has been bumped while laid into the (shorter) book; enveloped is likewise creased/curled on one end, very good.
