Vic Elford knows a thing or two about high performance driving, particularly in Porches. A former engineer, talanted race driver and victor in a multitude of race disciplines Vic has the experience of driving some of the most iconic race and production cars ever produced. In this tome, Vic beautifully illustrates with considerable detail his guidelines to to the art of high-performance driving. In a clear and readable way through 14 chapters, Vic shares his knowledge of the art of driving competently, safely and quickly in a Porsche road car. He elaborates upon the unique engenering setups that that give Porsches their charectaristic handeling traits, and how to understand and control the car's charecteristics. At the beginning of each chapter, Vic puts the topic into context with a real life racing experience from his career. The book commences with waht he considers to be the very basics of driving competently - being comfortable and as one with the car. Developing through a logical progression of chapters, he goes on to explain how various aspects of driving and the vehicle can be mastered and manipulated through carefully controlled driver inputs and driving theory. As well as supplying great detail of the physics behind the dynamics of his explenations, Vic writes in an accessible and interesting manner. The Elford anecdotes and pics from his glory days elevate it form being just a 'how to drive' manual --Octane magazine ;Written by a some-time Porsche race and rally driver, it might be suggested that there is no better qualified individual to write such a book. Well, this is the second edition so it must be fairly popular. if you are interested in improving your driving style, there are innumerable hints and tips contained within its paperback pages, which deal with the technicalities of driving --Octane magazine --Octane magazine
It's rare to read a driving manual from cover to cover - but I found it hard to put this book down. Englishman Vic Elford probably knows as much about Porsches as anyone - in the 60's he was one of the drivers who put Porsche on the racing map. He was the first man to win the Monte Carlo Rally in the marque and , just a week later, won the Daytona 24-hour in one. The astonishing, yet largley unkown, success of Vic included racing in Formula 1, the Indy Car Series, and even stock cars, as well as many rally successes. Indeed, the rules for the Can Am and Trans am were changed because Vic and his Porsche 910 and 917s won too often. So if anyone is qualifiedto write about performance car driving 'Quick' Vic's your man. This, the second edition of the Porsche High performance Driving Handbook, has been brought right up to date since the first appeared some 10 years ago. --Speed racer dot com
It's cheaper than a turbocharger and you can use it to become a faster, smoother, safer driver. --Evening Standard
Vic's book is an excellent starting point for any Porsche driver of any model. Nicely balanced between technical concepts and real-life examples, it stays interesting throughout. His emphasis on smoothness throughout the book echoes what you'll hear again and again at any instructed PCA Driving Event. It is a great preparation to becoming seriously involved in driving events and is equally valuable for having fun and being safe on the street. By no means is it the most complete or exhaustive book on the topic; rather, it is a marvelous and exciting introduction --Elford's style is easy to follow and fun to read. Nice balance of anecdotes and applications. Easy to follow diagrams and well suited to those not looking for track advice. Good, practical advice for the everyday situations. Good value for money. --Speed racer dot com
Born and raised in England, Vic Elford was one of the drivers who put Porsche on the racing map. He was the first to win the Monte Carlo rally in a Porsche, then, a week later, won the 24-Hour sports car race at Daytona. He raced Porsche 910s and 917s in both the Can Am and Trans Am series (they changed the rules in both series because he and his Porsches won too often), plus a slew of other marques in Formula 1, Indy and even stock car racing. He's still winning vintage car races today. If anyone understands how to apply high-performance driving skills to Porsches, it's Quick Vic. Elford resides in Plantation, Florida.
