My search for information turned into a guide for others.
When I finally obtained a correct diagnosis for my fibromyalgia in 1984, I wanted to know everything there was about to know about it. However, when I began to ask my rheumatologist, Dr. Bernard Rubin who is my also my co-author, where to find such information, he told me that there was very little that had been written for the lay person. Since I was a writer, herecommended that I write a book about the subject. Although this conversation was held in early 1987 and I began to research medical journals, I was not able to find anyone interested in publishing a book on it until 1991. The awareness of fibromyalgia as a legitimate diagnosis did not really begin building until 1990 when the American College of Rheumatology established the diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia. In planning the book, I thought of every question I had regarding FM from symptoms to diagnosis and from treatment to managing my life. I then researched the written material and interviewed health care professionals to provide the answers to those questions as well as drawing on my own experience. I am a firm believer in having a positive attitude about my health and my life in general. Since FM affects every aspect of an individual's life, I wanted to apply that positive attitude to the book and the suggestions on living with FM. I deliberately avoided using the word patient, for example, because in general that implies a passive individual. This 3rd Edition is very exciting because there is so much research being done on FM and the openness of using alternative therapies gives us the hope of real progress. The resource section has been revised and expanded to include new books, newsletters, organizations and support groups and even the WEB. When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away is intended as a basic handbook with resources for advanced information. I hope it helps you, as well as your loved ones, learn about FM, and enables you to take charge of your health and life. Good luck and Best Wishes.
Gayle Backstrom (Denton, TX), the author of "The Resource Guide for the Disabled" and "When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away," has had fibromyalgia since childhood. She has taught college courses in technical writing and business communications.
