It was in 1869 that the term homosexual was devised by a Hungarian doctor as part of an ongoing struggle against new German legislation that was to remain unchanged for over 100 years. The word was used openly in efforts to establish homosexual rights from 1897 until the European groups were destroyed by Nazism and Stalinism in the1930's. The authors carefully uncover the lost history of this period, with abundant references to well-known gay pioneers, their defenders, and their enemies. This is the early history of a movement generally thought not to have had an early movement.
