From the Author

Generation by generation, the cool slang of American youth.
For the two years that I worked on this book, I immersed myself in 20th century American youth culture. I track youth slang decade by decade, splitting the 1950's and 1960's into mainstream and counterculture. Surprises abound - the strong appearance of "groovy" in the 1940's, the consistent and pervasive influence of African-American slang on youth slang beginning in the 1930's, the striking similarities between the speech of the sub-deb of 1942 and the Valley Girl of 1982, the impact of AM disc jockeys in the 1960's, and the continuing evolution of hip from 1904 to the present. Throughout, the spirit of youth shines through.

Synopsis

Covers the use of slang by young people decade by decade and defines such words as "pastry snake" and "dumpster diving".
