Discus

Discus are often said to be the most difficult cichlids to keep, but anyone who takes a serious interest in them will soon discover that looking after and breeding them is quite easy provided the basic rules of aquarium care are observed. This beautifully illustrated book explains these rules clearly and includes many other interesting features on the care of discus.
What are discus?
For many aquarists discus are the kings of the freshwater aquarium. Discus live naturally in the river Amazon and its tributaries. At first, after their discovery and later import into Europe, keeping discus was a skill reserved for the specialist only. However, after some years it became possible to breed discus form the original wild stock. this was the beginning of the success story of discus in home aquariums in our country. Gradually discus taken from the wild were replaced in the aquarium by turquoise-coloured offsring which displayed much more vivid colours. In the course of the past 20 years the offspring of all colour varieties became so sought after that constant efforts were made to create new colours.
Discus are sometimes said to be difficult to care for, but anyone who has taken a serious interest in these species will have discovered that keeping and breeding them is quite easy provided that the basic rules of aquarium care and fishkeeping are observed.
There are essentially two types of discus lovers. The first group consists of the many aquarists who buy discus because they like the fish and want to keep them. However, if young discus are kept in an aquarium with other species, some will inevitably be lost. As a result the frustrated aquarist will eventually give up keeping these fish. But this does not have to happen as long as you observe the basic rules which this book will teach you. Discus are easy to keep in an aquarium and do not easily succumb to illness. For a discus to die in an aquarium, a lot will have to go wrong.
Are you successful in rearing your discus, in keeping them and perhaps in breeding them? Then you will judge keeping discus a very satisfying hobby and one day you will probably find yourself part of the second group of aquarists who devote themselves to these fish. Smitten by discus fever, you can be counted among the aquarists who have successfully bred discus!
