The German Wirehaired Pointer is the ideal all-round Gundog, specialising in hunting, pointing and retrieving. He is a robust, impressive-looking dog, with a thick, harsh coat, enabling him to work in thorn and bramble, which is a great asset on rough shoots. Since the breed was imported from Germany it has become increasingly popular as a tough, cheerful working dog, an affectionate and loyal family companion, and a distinguished show dog. In this comprehensive Book of the Breed, the author, who works and shows her dogs, covers both aspects of the breed, highlighting training methods and leading Wirehair kennels. Guidance is given on what to look for when choosing a puppy, and special emphasis is placed on training and socialising the Wirehair in order to maximise this versatile breed's full potential. The Breed Standard is analysed in detail, and is illustrated with top-quality line-drawings. Useful advice is given on show training and presentation of the show dog. A chapter is dedicated to the working Wirehair, and there is also information on more specialised training activities, including deer stalking, falconry, agility, drug detection and therapy work. For the more experienced owner, there is indepth coverage of choosing breeding stock and rearing a litter. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and line-drawings, German Wirehaired Pointers Today is essential reading for the growing band of Wirehair enthusiasts.
The German Wirehaired Pointer, as the name suggests, originated in Germany where the breed is known as Drahthaar, the translation of Wirehair. It is a recent development in puebred dogs. An early ancestor is thought to be the Baret, one of Europe's first rough-haired sporting dogs, supposedly developed from crosses between rough-haired sheepdogs, known as Schapudel, and smooth-coated hunting dogs, known as Bracke. In the beginning of the 19th century the Barbet, who has proved to be successful on all kind of game, both in water and over all types of ground, was crossed with other German sporting dogs and a new breed, known as the Ruehaar, was created. This name was later changed to Stichelhaar, which is more widely known today.
