In Witness to His Return, licensed professional counselor Scott Sparrow shares and interprets scores of true personal accounts by individuals who have had life~changing encounters with Christ. Dr. Sparrow defines an encounter as any experience in which a person perceives the presence of a being whom he or she identifies as Christ. The number of experiences recorded suggests that the Christ encounter is a widespread phenomenon~ one largely overlooked and given only fleeting attention by theologians, ministers, and psychologists. Yet, these personal events have occurred both in the waking state and in dreams and have transformed the lives of the witnesses in remarkable ways. In analyzing the accounts, Dr. Sparrow found that the experiences could be arranged in specific categories, with some overlapping. They include: Awakenings in which Christ appears for the first time Physical healings of actual illnesses Emotional healings of depression, fear, or other disabling emotions Intimate instructions which provide needed guidance. A common element found in all of the recorded encounters seems to be that it allows the individual to surrender a limited sense of identity. This surrender can occur in at least two ways: (1) during a physical or emotional crisis or (2) during the practices of prayer and meditation. All of these dramatic stories are so moving that when read they awaken in the reader a profound sense of love, self~acceptance, and forgiveness. They seem to speak to a depth in the human psyche which transcends religious and interpersonal differences. In most cases they signal the beginning of a new phase in the witness's life. After reviewing scores of these Christ encounters one might ask, are they really what they seem to be? That is, does Christ really appear to individuals today? Dr. Sparrow says that the modern~day testimonies of a widening circle of credible witnesses will conclude~with some wonder~yes, He does. Witness to His Return is an introduction to the Christ encounter experience and how it can impact the life of the witnesses. It is a step toward providing a forum for sharing experiences that heretofore~for various reasons~have been kept secret from the world at large. "This book bears serious consideration and study as we, as a society, try to make sense for ourselves of the nature of these unusual states of awareness and of their bearing on the spiritual life of humankind." ~Raymond Moody, M.D., Ph.D. Author of the best~seller Life After Life.
