Seller: Mullen Books, ABAA, Marietta, PA, U.S.A.
Softcover. Green paper wraps. 281 pp. Color and bw plates. Title on spine and front cover: Raphael and his circle. The annotated and illustrated catalogue presents 90 specific pieces. "I felt that it would be of unusual value to scholars and to the public generally if we could see Raphael in relation to the artists working in his circle in Rome. Therefore, nearly half of the works described in this volume are by Raphael; the others are by Giulio Romano, Giovanni Francesco Penni, Perino del Vaga, Polidoro da Caravaggio, and Baldassare Peruzzi." / "The present exhibition is both an abridgment and an enlargement of the one held in the British Museum in 1983 to celebrate the five-hundredth anniversary of Raphael's birth, which set out to include every drawing by him in the British collections. . .Of the ninety-one drawings now shown at The Pierpont Morgan Library, only forty-eight are by or attributed to Raphael himself. Greater emphasis is given to the studio. and the artists included in this section, in addition to Giulio and Penni, are the two slightly younger studio assistants Perino del Vaga and Polidoro da Caravaggio and Raphael's Sienese contemporary and associate in Rome Baldassare Peruzzi. All but ten of the forty-eight sheets catalogued under the name of Raphael come from four collections: the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Royal Library at Windsor Castle and the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth. With the exception of No. 5, the others come from public and private collections in the United States." /. G+ (Outer spine has sunned slightly and has some wear; interior is clean.).
