We assembled a great crew of 15 writers, including veteran consumer journalists, lawyers, a psychotherapist, a certified master mechanic, a CPA and more. And we had them probe just about every common deal and transaction that people make, from buying cars to taking clothes to the dry cleaners, from reserving a hotel room to grocery shopping. And for every situation we identified all of the things a consumer can do to pull the transaction to his favor--what to say, what reference to consult, what button to push, who to call, and so forth. There is one matter here that bears a little explanation, I think.
