Entries range from 500 to a few thousand words and include both references and suggestions for additional reading (including young adult works). Emphasis is palced on the post colonial era with two thirds of the entrries dating from 1950 onwards. the biographies are alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced and indexed. User-friendly appendices list each individual by country and by field of accomplishment. An additional appendix lists heads of state since independence.
