"Permanent Revolution" calls to mind the name of Leon Trotsky as surely as "Relativity" does that of Albert Einstein. In their original audacity and great scope, these two famous theories have a certain symmetry. Trotsky's initial statement of the theory made him celebrated as the prophet of Russia's revolutions of 1905 and 1917. In 1924, Stalin - who had originally condemned the idea of a socialist revolution in backward Russia as "utopian" - launched a campaign against the Theory of the Permanent Revolution as the original sin of Trotskyism.
