The Brooklyn Museum has played a major role in presenting and interpreting North American Native art. Its commitment to this field began in 1903, when R. Stewart Culin was appointed to head its new Department of Ethnology. During three trips to the Northwest in 1905, 1908, and 1911, Culin collaborated with Dr. Charles F. Newcombe and bought several pieces from Newcombe's own collection, including objects from the Haida, Kwakiutl, Nootka, and Salish as well as some Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Athapaskan pieces. By 1912 the museum's collection included more than 9,000 pieces.
Objects of Myth and Memory is the first publication devoted to this fascinating and influential early collection. It includes two interpretive essays on Culin's career as well as 250 individual entries which illustrate and annotate his most important acquisitions.
A visually stunning book, Objects of Myth and Memory presents masterworks of North American Indian art in a precise social and historical context and offers fascinating glimpses of the collecting process.

Breen (OSAGE CATALOGUE ENTRIES). -- The catalogue section of the book is divided into four parts: the Southwest, California, the Northwest Coast, and the Osage of Oklahoma. Each part contains an essay reviewing Culin's goals and itinerary within the region, his main contacts, and the social and economic conditions that contributed to his success. Based primarily on his hitherto unpublished expedition reports, these essays portray Culin as an indefatigable and competitive collector, exalting in his triumphs but frequently acknowledging confusion and defeat as he faced the challenges of collecting in communities where acculturation had already rendered many native artifacts obsolete. - The objects in this beautifully illustrated book show the remarkable breadth of Culin's collecting and demonstrate the aesthetic and historical significance of his choices. Ranging from tiny amulets to monumental totem poles, they include unusual games such as a string figure made by a Navajo boy, rare ceremonial regalia such as a Maidu feather belt, and outstanding examples of more familiar artifact types. Culin's detailed documentation allows Objects of Myth and Memory to present masterworks of American Indian art in a precise social and historical context.
