Synopsis

Volume 1 features Mill's Autobiography as well as related essays which together paint a balanced picture of his early life, including his rigorous 'home schooling' at the hands of his father, James Mill, and the emotional crisis of his early adulthood. Such insights are a wonderful primer for later substantive volumes of Mill's work and shed light on the character of nineteenth-century Britain's foremost liberal intellectual. This volume was assembled under the direction of Professor John M Robson of the University of Toronto and includes such rare material as Mill's childhood writings, examples of his early articles published in such journals as 'The Westminster Review' and the 'London Review', and a youthful critique of his father's philosophical contributions.

About the Author

John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher, politician and economist most famous for his contributions to the theory of utilitarianism. The author of numerous influential political treatises, Mill s writings on liberty, freedom of speech, democracy and economics have helped to form the foundation of modern liberal thought. His 1859 work, On Liberty, is particularly noteworthy for helping to address the nature and limits of the power of the state over the individual. Mills has become one of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century philosophy, and his writings are still widely studied and analyzed by scholars. Mills died in 1873 at the age of 66.

Jack Stillinger (Ph.D. Harvard) is Center for Advanced Study Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Illinois. He is the author of The Hoodwinking of Madeline and Other Essays on Keats s Poems, The Texts of Keats s Poems, the standard edition of The Poems of John Keats; Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius; Coleridge and Textual Instability; and Reading "The Eve of St. Agnes." He is the recipient of Guggenheim and Woodrow Wilson fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
